A statement on our schools ethos and values.
St Agnes’ School aims to create an ethos of Catholic values, belief, practice and knowledge so that all children will have the opportunity for their faith to be nurtured in a warm, caring and secure atmosphere.
We believe this will allow our young people to develop their potential to the fullest and prepare them for the many challenges of secondary education and as future responsible citizens, who will play a useful role within the communities they serve.
Our priorities in achieving this include:
- To create traditional Christian values based upon the Gospels and to encourage to the best of our abilities the full and active participation of our pupils, parents, staff and governors in living out these values.
- To promote full and active support by building strong partnerships between home and school initially, but expanding outwards into the local community and the parish of St Agnes’.
- To ensure that all our pupils are offered an equal opportunity to experience and participate in a full range of activities relevant to their age, ability and maturity, without discrimination as to sex, social background, disability, religion, race and culture. Our curriculum will offer breadth, balance, relevance, differentiation, progression and continuity.
- To consider the needs of the whole child by educating in a way that stimulates and fosters growth and potential, and wherever possible to make the process an enjoyable one utilising the experiences of that child.
- To value all staff and provide the means and opportunities to enable them to develop their skills and realise their potential.
- To foster within each child a moral, and social responsibility by promoting self-discipline from which will flow a disciplined, orderly, respectful community within a loving, caring and forgiving framework.
- To further develop links will all our fellow schools but in particular to strengthen and support our relationships with all our feeder comprehensives and in particular St Thomas More Comprehensive School.
Ethos and School Mission
At St Agnes’ we work together to promote a family of learning based on our faith in the Gospel values embedded in love and learning. Everyone at St Agnes’ is a valued, loved and respected member our school and parish. We work together to make sure we make our school community, wider community and the world we live in a better place to be.
We all work together through the Gospel Values to always put the children we serve at the centre of all we do.
St. Agnes’ is our school with Jesus at the heart, where each individual can grow in the knowledge and love of Christ. Everyone in our school community is valued and respected and our talents are celebrated.
We aim to provide a high standard of education where learning is enjoyable and children are inspired to reach their true potential. We love, care and respect everyone and treat everyone equally.
We are a school where we learn and grow, following in the footsteps of Jesus.

British Values
The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. The DfE has recently reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values.’ These are:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
At St. Agnes’ Catholic Primary School we are committed to serving our community and local area. In so doing we reinforce British values regularly and in the following ways:
Democracy
Democratic values are an explicit part of the ethos at St. Agnes’. All adults listen to the views of the pupils and value their opinions. Pupils have further opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council and Pupil Voice interviews. The elections of School Council and Mini Vinnie members are the result of pupil votes and all of these groups canvas the opinions of their peers.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws and rules are consistently reinforced in the classroom, as well as through school assemblies. Pupils are taught to understand the need for laws – that they are there for individual protection, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Pupils follow a positive behaviour policy and clearly understand the rewards and sanctions that are used. Assemblies and discussions in class focus on recognising right from wrong and visits from the Police, Fire Service and local councillors help to reinforce these messages.
Individual Liberty

Mutual Respect
Our school’s ethos and behaviour policy are based on Gospel values, with the important commandment being, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’. Acts of Worship constantly promote respect for others and the importance of good manners. All pupils are taught the importance of self-respect, honest and open communication with others and fair play. Pupils work collaboratively and value others’ opinions.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a Catholic worshipping community, pupils are reminded of their place in a culturally diverse society. This is achieved through our Religious Education curriculum and the spiritual life of the school. Acts of Worship and class work promote the diversity of society and the right for each person to be respected and valued equally regardless of ability, gender, faith, heritage or race. Members of different faiths or religions are invited to school to share their knowledge and enhance learning within Acts of Worship and in class.

Reception – Little Kickers
The children have made such amazing progress in Little Kickers since starting school. We have been working on our listening skills and our spacial awareness and movement. We were lucky this week to get on to our amazing field area to have a few games of football.
