Spreading Success in Year 2

A post in our latest news section.

Year 2 have been busy this week developing their practical food preparation skills as part of their latest Design and Technology topic. The children learned all about how to use kitchen tools safely and carefully, with a particular focus on spreading and cutting.

After discussing how to handle equipment responsibly and the importance of keeping workspaces clean, the children had the opportunity to put their learning into action. They practised a range of skills:

  • Spreading butter, smoothly and evenly
  • Cutting with control, using the “bridge” and “claw” techniques

The children showed fantastic concentration and growing confidence as they worked. They were proud of their efforts—and even more excited to taste their finished creations!

This hands-on experience is helping Year 2 build independence, coordination, and an understanding of how everyday foods are prepared. We are looking forward to seeing how these skills develop across the rest of the DT unit.

Well done, Year 2!
