Year 2 had a thoroughly enriching visit to Beamish Open‑Air Museum as part of their learning about life during the Victorian era. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of history through first‑hand experience.
During the day, the children explored the underground mine, gaining an insight into the challenging working conditions of the past. They also enjoyed riding the steam engine Puffing Billy Locomotive and the historic tram, helping the children to appreciate how people travelled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A walk around the 1900s town allowed pupils to observe Victorian shops, homes and streets, making strong links to their classroom learning. The children took part in an authentic Victorian-style classroom experience, led by a teacher reflecting the strict discipline of the era.
The trip brought history to life and offered many meaningful connections to the topic studied. The children were engaged, curious and enthusiastic throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating their growing knowledge of the Victorian era. Overall, the visit was an invaluable and memorable learning experience for all.
